Approximately 12,000 acres of land in the Stann Creek District of Belize is being developed by Sanctuary Bay Ltd. The developers have placed a high emphasis on environmental preservation, with a carefully planned growth strategy based upon ongoing project development. The land comprises mostly of an environmentally important corridor extending from the 100,000-acre Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary (the Jaguar Preserve) in the Maya Mountains, along the southern bank of the Sittee River to the Caribbean Sea. The developers’ keen interest in preserving the environmental integrity of the properties has protected from development some 10,500 acres of land by transferring ownership to the Sittee River Wildlife Reserve. The area is home to a wide variety of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, and is to be maintained as a nature reserve in perpetuity. Owners will have a share in the Sittee River Wildlife Reserve, thereby contributing to the ongoing protection and preservation of endangered wildlife. This share of ownership will allow them unlimited access to the protected area, as well as guarantee them a role in the preservation of this important wildlife sanctuary.
